The simplest iron-sulphur centre is the rubredoxintype [Fe(Cys)4] mononuclear iron centre, in which iron is tetrahedrally coordinated with four cysteines [1, 2]. Desulforedoxin represents another class of Fe(Cys)4 proteins with a distorted tetrahedral coordination of the iron [3]. Rubrerythrin and desulfoferrodoxin are fusion proteins containing rubredoxintype and desulforedoxintype domains, respectively [4].
