Subunit packing in bacterioferritin (PDB code 1BFR). Subunits are depicted as ribbon diagrams. Haem groups and metal atoms are not shown. Subunits pack around 2fold axes as antiparallel dimers (A+B, C+D, ..., U+V, W+X), which bind single haem b group (see Figure 1BCF).

  1. View from the outside of the molecule down 2fold symmetry axis; only the `upper' subunits are shown. Chain A = red; chain B = deep red; chain C = orange; chain D = pink; chain E = cyan; chain F = violet; chain G = pale green; chain H = deep green; chain I = blue; chain H = deep blue; chain Q = pale yellow; chain R = yellow; chain U = deep purple; chain V = pale purple.
  2. View from the outside of the molecule down 3fold symmetry axis (3fold channel); subunits C, D, E, F, U and V only are shown. Colours as in a.
  3. View from the outside of the molecule down 4fold symmetry axis (4fold channel); subunits A through H only are shown. Colours as in a.
All drawings were produced by using the program MOLSCRIPT [3].
